Typography converter
Points, picas, ems and pixels. 6 units, converted from one table of exact factors.
—
1 point in every other typography unit
Computed by the same engine that runs the converter above, so these can never drift apart from it.
| From | Equals | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 point | 0.083333333 | pica (pc) |
| 1 point | 0.013888889 | inch (in) |
| 1 point | 0.35277778 | millimeter (mm) |
| 1 point | 1.3333333 | pixel (96 dpi) (px) |
| 1 point | 0.083333333 | em (12 pt) (em) |
What each unit actually is
Most converters give you a number and stop. Where a figure is exact by definition we say so, and where it is an average or shifts with conditions we say that too — that is usually the thing you needed to know.
| Unit | Symbol | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|
| point | pt | A 72nd of an inch in modern desktop publishing. Older typographic points were slightly different. |
| pica | pc | Twelve points. |
| inch | in | Exact, given the modern point. |
| millimeter | mm | |
| pixel (96 dpi) | px | Only true at 96 dpi, which is the CSS convention rather than a property of any screen. |
| em (12 pt) | em | An em is the current font size, so this is only right when the type is 12 pt. |
